Research Character Archetypes Urban Drama

The Leader

Due to the fact that urban drama's are generally revolved around group activity there always has to be a leader, this is the person who makes the most dramatic and controversial decisions within the storyline. The leader is generally an authorative figure as in urban dramas they need to be in control of a bunch of youths who are generally disorderly to society. Finally the leader has to be rather intellingent as they have to dodge many people which may include rivals and the police.

The group of friends

Once again as urban drama is in need of organised groups the majority of the time, the group of friends (which can also be considered a gang varying on the type of urban drama it is) is also an important part of these films. The film would mostly revolve around this group of friends even though the protagonist is in the mix, however, as urban dramas are meant to be shot in run down areas, the need for a group is raised therefore the group would be shown on shot almost as much as the protagonist due to the need for safety. Finally, the group also adds character to the film as each individual member of the group has there own character which adds a certain viewpoint of interesting person that the audience can grasp onto.

Law Enforcement

The police are vital in most urban dramas however their input into the film as a whole varies, sometimes they can be the enemy who the protagonist is fighting against or they are just an obstacle in the film. If the police are a contrasting force or a minor force they still have a part to play in many urban dramas due to the fact that the majority of the characters are criminals so to keep the film realistic there must be a sense of control present in the area, unless your plot is set within a lawless area.

The Enemy

There would be no point within an urban drama if there isnt an enemy that poses a threat to the safety of the protagonist and his peers, the enemies vary and they are generally powerful for two reasons; either money or violence, there is the rich enemy who has enough money to pull the strings which can result to trouble for the protagnist, then the violent enemies cause havoc for obvious reasons, due to their violent nature.
