Propp's Theory of Narrative

Propp's Theory of Narrative:

- Vladimir Propp created a theory on archetypal characters of 'the hero' , 'the villain' , 'the false hero' etc. These archetypal roles take very clear distinct roles where the hero adopts the role of the protagonist and is the leading character who works against the 'villain' who is the antagonist.

- With regards to our own trailer, we used this theory because we wanted to consider standard rules of character archetypes within film so that we would be able to subvert the conventions of a stereotypical Hollywood film because we were developing a hybrid / urban drama film.

- Our 'hero' possesses criminal qualities therefore also contains characteristics of a 'villain' showing how we have subverted the conventions of characters to fit our teaser trailer.

QUESTION 3 - ARMANI QUARRINGTON-GRAY

What have you learned from your audience feedback?

We gathered our audience feedback off of survey monkey - reaching to over 100 members of the audience. We were then able to tailor our trailer and film based on the feedback we received.

The majority of the audience were female. therefore we thought it would be a good idea to cast a female as the protagonist. The reason we chose to do this is because we thought that female protagonists are not cast enough in films period. So especially when theres a majority female audience - the audience may be more compelled to watch a female lead.

100% of our audience fell into the 16-18 age rage, therefore our film and trailer has to be suitable for a age certificate up to 18. We were able to do this by researching age certificates. We found that the 15 age certificate was most suitable for our trailer as we were not limiting it to only 16-18 year olds.

AUDIENCE IMPACT

Survey monkey allowed us to get gather an idea on what the audience wanted to see in an urban drama and vampire movie.

The majority of the audience voted for a tracksuit - therefore we would include a tracksuit as the protagonist costume.

The audience found that a grime soundtrack best suits an urban drama, therefore we would include a grime soundtrack.

The audience suggested that a busy highstreet is a best location for an urban drama therefore we would include a busy highstreet as one of our main locations.

The audience showed a clear response on social media.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Through the social links on our website - we were also able to discover how the audience interact with our movie.

On our poster we included the '#bludmovie' which people could use on facebook and twitter.

When searching the hashtag on twitter we found that the majority of people using the hashtag were also female and seemed to be young perhaps 16-28.

QUESTION 1; ARMANI QUARRINGTON-GRAY

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Question 2; ARMANI QUARRINGTON-GRAY

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

N****s in Paris Music Video Deconstruction

Paris:

- Editing of this music video is fascinatingly inspiring. The effect of mirroring is interesting throughout the start of this teaser trailer. The use of horizontal and vertical mirroring helps to disorientate, yet intrigue the viewer. This element of disorientation is further shown through the use of quick flashes of strobe lighting. In several shots, the use of a horizontal and a vertical mirror is used in one frame to quickly confuse the reader. Following on from this, the frame will then return to one mirror to allow the viewer to be grounded and understand what is happening in the digetic world.

- The use of careful colour coordination is used, where the illuminated lights are projected behind a mainly black or dark colour schemed back ground is effective because it epitomises the ecstasy of the nightlife in the concert. This shows how lighting and colour can be used for effect which could definitely be used for effect in our trailer.

Improvements

Typography Improvements

Originally we planned to use arial font as it was Urban Drama typically use. But due to the fact its is a hybrid we were doing a hybrid genre we felt we had to bring something more. this second font that we used really drew in this aspect of blood.

Mercy Music Video Deconstruction

Mercy:

- Throughout the whole video, only the themes of black and white are used which can be used to convey many meanings. Common interpretations of this colour coordination could be that it is used to highlight simply good vs. evil, where good is represented by white and evil is represented by black. In other interpretations, black and white could be used to symbolise a struggle of some sort. For example, in Sin City the theme of black and white is used (justice vs. sin) to symbolise this and this is also an example of how a whole film can be portrayed through simply just black and white and be effective still. Schindler's List is another example of a less graphical, yet still effective film. We could use a selection of black and white shots to epitomise the supernatural theme within our trailer.

- I feel that the constant and steady pan made throughout the start of the video and the rest of the majority, is effective because it demonstrates a passive tone but also, helps the video to progress efficiently.
