Social Realism

Social Realism

Although we are not doing a genre that is specifically social realist, Urban Drama is a branch of social realist films, therefore we thought it would be important to research.

This genre of film typically focuses on topical issues, which was something that was a very strong underlying factor of our ancillary text. These issues are alive in modern day society and are represented by different ideologies. For example money, drugs, prostitution as well as class, religion and political views.

The age is also a very important to the forms and conventions of social realism. Most films use young teenagers and adults from 13 - 20. 'Kidulthood', 'Kes', 'Sweet Sixteen' and 'this is England' all have main characters between this ages.

The audience of social realism tends to be quite wide as it appeals to the young but also the old as some of the messages may be aimed towards the older audience.

The issue we wanted to address was the idea of entrapment and the fact the government doesn't give low working people the opportunity, and chance to get out of this 'ghetto' that they were born in. Therefore an endless cycle is created.
