Pre-Production; Casting in Urban Drama's

Pre-Production Casting

For our trailer we would like our protagonist to be similar to the characters who feature in real urban drama films and vampire films. When researching both the genres we discovered that mainly male protagonist are used.

Attack The Block

In 'Attack The Block' John Boyega plays the lead role of Moses - a working class teen who leads a battle against an alien invasion. He is a black male, falls into the 16-21 years old category, wears street clothing that consists of; tracksuits, bandana's, hoodies, a black mac coat and trainers.

His role: he is the alpha male of his friendship group, a strong, quite but confident character. He is smart and shows good athletic abilities. By the end of the film he is arrested by the police but deemed a hero by his friends and family.

Kidulthood

In 'Kiduthood' Alim plays the lead role of Trevor. Kidulthood follows the journey of this working class teen and his friends as they come into trouble. Trevor is a black male who falls into the age range of 16-21, he wears street clothing such as; tracksuits, hoodies, trainers, baggy jeans and a baseball jacket.

His role; he is the alpha male of his friendship group. He is confident, cheeky, rude and sometimes violent character however he is depicted to have a good heart. By the end of the film Trevor is killed by a school rival and deeply missed by his friends and family.

Adulthood

Adulthood is the sequel to kidult. It follows the journey of Sam the killer of Trevor in the last movie and his life once he is released from prison a few years later. Sam is a working class black male who falls into the age range of 20-25 years. He wears street clothing such as; tracksuits, hoodies, trainers, baggy jeans and hats.
Sam leaves prison a changed character, once a hated, violent and aggressive character - Sam is more humble but alone as he tries to make up for what he has done. By the end of the movie gets into a brawl with one of Trevors friends, however this brawl does not result in any of them dying or getting arrested, instead the audience grow to like Sam and feel sorry for him.

From our research into Urban Drama protagonist there are few key things that show evident.
Firstly, the protagonist is a young black male.
Secondly, they conform to the working class and wear urban clothes.
Thirdly, they can be quite aggressive in their behaviour but the audience grows to like them.
Finally, by the end of the movie something bad happens to them - they either get arrested, die or get into a fight.

For our movie we would like to include and also develop some of these ideas. We definitely want our character to be black, young and present ideas that relate to being apart of the working class. However we want to subvert urban drama / gangster movie codes and conventions by having our protagonist be female. By this we want to show how our film is different and present our message more clearly.
