Final Girl Theory

Final Girl Theory

- The final girl theory is specifically in relation to the genres of horror / slasher films, and is used commonly in many conventional films of this genre.
- The theory itself is in specific relation to the group of females within the group of protagonists and exclaims how the innocent girl within the group will survive where as the sexualised and explicit girl will not.
- The innocent girl will not participate in any flirting / sexual activities and will not be sexually objectified. This means that she will wear standard clothing that will not be regarded necessarily as sexually appealing. Furthermore, she will not swear and may possess child qualities. For example, in Scream, the final girl’s room is pink and she has various teddy bears on her bed. Reason for this is to claim her innocence to the audience and identify her as the Final Girl.
- The explicit girl will almost be destined to die in a horror film and will particularly adopt a very sexualised role. She may swear often to exclaim the lack of innocence she possesses and also will wear highly sexualised clothing which will be provocative and sexually appealing.

- With relation to our teaser trailer, I feel that because our genre is not only a horror, it is also an urban drama and therefore a hybrid, we must look at the wider picture and perhaps think about subverting this theory. Perhaps we could use the idea of the Final Girl Theory and subvert it by making the protagonist, surviving girl to be not particularly innocent. This is especially important because we are looking at creating an urban drama where we examine the realities of the British class working youth and therefore, want to give an accurate representation of them.
