Deconstruction of True Blood Trailer
- With the first presentation of a vampire (not in the TV) in the trailer the audience does not see any obvious features which identify the character as a vampire; the only aspect which seems abnormal about this shot is the extremely dark lighting. This epitomises the idea of TrueBlood being such a successful, yet, unconventional vampire film because they are able to create the suspense of vampires without abiding by the typical conventions which surround vampire films.
- Examining the representation of vampires on the TV however, makes it clear to the audience that a key theme in this series is the presence of Vampire culture. The stereotypical convention is portrayed at the start in this TV interview and then later in the trailer, these conventions are subverted. For example, the humans seem to be more powerful than the vampires in the scene where the acts of discrimination and scapegoating are demonstrated.
- The non-digetic music during the scenes of supposed danger in relation to the vampires is rather upbeat, happy and hopeful which contrasts to the action of the digetic world which shows deaths as a result of vampires. This comparison identifies to the viewer that these vampires do not pose a great threat to society; the threat which they pose is only minor.
- The representation of vampires in the scene where the girl walks into the room almost feeds into the conventions of stereotypical vampires. This poses a complete contradiction to the previous representation of the vampire who shows himself in public. This feeds into the conventions of the series in that it focuses on how groups can be isolated within society. Therefore, representations in our trailer could demonstrate how individual groups can be ostracised in the same way. Furthermore, the difference in representation could show how we are made to like some vampires but not others; furthering the theme of isolating individuals in society.
