- A key convention of a thriller movie is that it is usually based within an urban area which feeds conveniently into our other half of the hybrid genre, urban drama. We already plan to comply with this convention because we would wish to film in the area of Woolwich, an urban and highly populated area.
- Violence is key to a thriller and can be used as a vector to create a sense of suspense.
- Thrillers often incorporate the presence of a supernatural being(s) which will appear in our teaser trailer because we have included a vampire within the plot.
- In our teaser trailer, the vampire and the thug both share qualities because they are both criminals and used to be close friends, therefore, must be similar.
- The events within the thriller, should contribute to some sort of negative effect of society; in our trailer the vampire will kill innocent civilians.
Urban Drama:
- Urban drama is used as a vector to portray realism within urban lifestyle. Often, urban dramas are used to highlight social issues and within our trailer, we will raise the themes of gang/criminal lifestyle.
- Urban dramas often show themes of black culture such as violence, rapping, murder, racism and gang culture. This will also be shown in our trailer.
- Protagonist is usually a product of their environment; Aaliyah, although perceived as some as a criminal and a thug, will stop a potential threat to the whole of society which would make her an unconventional heroine.
- Urban dramas act as a form of social realism and aim to educate viewers about issues which the director wishes to convey. Although our film will not act as a social realist and will be purely for the means of entertainment, elements of urban lifestyle with London will be conveyed effectively.
- Key characteristics about the antagonist are that they are often a traitor or ex-friend of the antagonist. Furthermore, they have something about them which makes them isolated from other people or differentiates them from others. These features will be present within our antagonist.
- We plan to create a cross genre / hybrid film where we will combine the themes of an 'urban drama' and a 'thriller.' Although all hybrids are typically fiction, we will still be able to conform to some of the conventions of a social realist with regards to the 'urban drama' aspects of our film. Usually, hybrid films stimulate discussion because they are able to be unconventional and present a type of film which is not generally found. Our film will definitely comply to this by combining the idea of a vampire within an urban setting.
