Deconstruction of Underworld

Underworld:

  • In order to highlight the mythological presence of such fictional creatures (vampires and lycans) the use of Gothic mise en scene is explored. This helps to identify an ancient relationship which has been intertwined for a long period of time. The Gothic period is also associated with vampire, werewolves and other supernatural beings (literary texts such as Frankenstein, Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde and Dracula).
  • The key colours used throughout the trailer are all dark and sometimes dark blue. This dark blue could perhaps be symbolic of the cold, icy blood of the vampires and the opposite to red which could be recognised as normal human blood. The dark blue perhaps evokes a lack of compassion and emotion, evident within the heartless and monstrous vampire.
  • The effect of showing a moon through the eye of someone demonstrates clearly themes within the film. The moon itself is symbolic of nocturnal, supernatural beings and therefore to show this in somebodys eye is showing how this supernatural status is almost a part of them.
  • In this shot, we see the main character shooting the floor and subsequently, travelling down into a dark pit. This fall is directly reflective of the title of the film and it effectively demonstrates the evil and hellish themes within the film. I feel that the following birds eye view shot after this, helps to further elucidate the evil within the film because of how the character has willingly shot the floor in order to allow herself to travel into a world below the current one.
  • The voice-over within the teaser trailer compliments the action on screen and builds dramatic tension in the sense that all except one person’s voice can be heard. I feel the  subtlety and serenity within her voice helps to convey the cunning and sinister characteristics of her as a vampire which highlights a key theme within the play.
